Did You Know We Provide An Alternative To Gas Fired Water Heaters?

When it’s time to replace your gas-fired water heater, you don’t have to settle for a direct like-for-like replacement — McDonald Water Storage offers a perfect alternative solution.

When Olney Rugby Club were looking to replace an old Lochinvar EP300WN, a commercial-grade, floor-standing, gas-fired water heater, their contractor got in touch with our commercial experts for assistance. The existing unit was a box gas fired water heater on top of an LST100 storage tank (450ltr).

They had three existing boilers installed in different areas around the building, with the gas fired water heaters in a cupboard within the changing room area. Their plan was to take away a section of the gym and put a plantroom there so that everything is in one place.

The hot water supply was to meet the demands of the rugby club which had;

  • 18 wash hand basins
  • 2 cleaners sinks
  • 24 showers
  • 2 large baths, approximately 2m square

.

PLATEflow water heater

Our technical team collaborated closely with the contractor to determine the precise specification required. The facility features five rugby pitches capable of hosting matches simultaneously. Regular weekend fixtures and midweek training sessions contribute to consistent demand, while sports camps held during school holidays further increase usage throughout the week.

Additionally, the bar area, complete with outdoor seating, often experienced high footfall due to its proximity to the cricket, bowling, and tennis clubs. With 100–150 people typically using the bar facilities both indoors and outdoors, the area also includes eight wash hand basins that needed to be factored into the system calculations.

Once all these calculations were put into our system, we calculated an estimated peak demand of 5,590 litres per hour.

On this basis and to meet peak demand requirements, we advised on the option of 2no. PLATEflow units including buffers. Once the kW rating of the boilers they had to feed the set up was ascertained, our recommendation was:

  • 2no. PLATEflow units with 1,250 litre buffer cylinders with 100kW plate on each

.

This configuration would deliver 2,500 Litre in the buffer storage + 3,096 litres per hour from both plate heat exchangers.
