When we received a phone call from a merchant to supply the prestigious Highclere Castle with a replacement hot water tank, which was requested to be “like for like” by the owners, this didn’t cause any ‘dramas’.
The original unit was an Elson Opal, not manufactured since 2010 when the original Elson factory closed down. This made the search for a direct replacement extremely difficult … until the merchant contacted McDonald Water Storage. We have the capability to manufacture the rectangular tank hot water storage units, unique to the industry.

The ELSOflow Opal is just one product from the ELSOflow range, providing the direct replacement for original Elson Opal and other range products. The Opal is an electrically heated open vented combination hot water storage unit which provides hot water. It allows for a fast, simple installation and can be supplied with two three-kilowatt immersion heater to reduce installation time.
This particular unit was bespoke manufactured to the customers requirements, meeting their specific dimensions so the unit fit exactly into the same space.
The famous castle has been used as a filming location for several films and television series, including Jeeves and Wooster and achieved international fame as the main filming location for the historical drama TV Series, Downton Abbey.
Highclere Castle is a Grade I listed country house built in 1679 and largely renovated in the 1840s, with a park designed by Capability Brown in the 18th century. The 5,000-acre estate is located in Highclere, Hampshire. It has been transformed from its roots in Anglo Saxon Times to a medieval palace, a Tudor place house, a Georgian house and today this iconic Victorian Castle. It sits within a park designed by Capability Brown in the eighteenth century.
