When it came to upgrading the hot water storage solution at Mascot House, the CUBEflow thermal store met the clients requirements.
BACKGROUND
Thirteen Group Housing Association were looking to improve the hot water performance within the properties at Mascot House, which is a sheltered accommodation scheme for Chinese people over the age of 60 in the central area of Newcastle and is made up of 30 one bedroom, two person properties. It forms part of Thirteen Groups housing portfolio that provides more than 73,000 people in the North East, Yorkshire and Humber region with homes.
The properties originally had combination style vented cylinders, which provided low pressure hot water throughout the properties, but with space at a premium they needed an alternative solution.
SOLUTION
DTA Consulting Engineers specified the CUBEflow thermal store to replace the existing combination cylinders. This thermal store approach can suit multiple installation applications, including electric, boiler or central plant inputs to meet hot water demand.
This installation required an electric only solution, with two 3kW immersion heaters providing the flexibility of heating the store during the Economy 7 off-peak period, in addition to be able to boost the system during the daytime if required. The store measured 490mm x 500mm, but with a height of just 1285mm. This 140L unit provided mains pressure hot water, utilising the internal heat exchanger to heat the domestic hot water instantaneously, not only negating any risk of legionella but also protected against scalding with the water being delivered via the blending valve, ensuring the hot water is delivered at a maximum of 55 degrees.
With our bespoke designed space saving solution, it provided significant cost savings not only during installation, as no discharge pipework requirement was required but also no ongoing maintenance costs, both of which are required with an unvented cylinder installation.
TESTIMONIALS
Ahmed Marei, Mechanical Engineer, DTA Consulting Engineers
Ahmed Marei commented “The installations are taking place smoothly with no issues. The product seems in a good shape and performance, and as the residents have returned back to apartments at two floors where the refurbishment took place, we have received no negative feedback.”
