Replacement Thermal Store Solutions
There are a large number of thermal stores installed throughout the UK, some in excess of 20 years old.
With many manufacturers changing their product range, discontinuing thermal storage or pushing alternatives such as stainless steel with completely different connection layouts, having a different footprint and not fitting into the existing installation area, we have seen a steady rise in enquiries from installers and homeowners who would prefer a direct replacement for their existing thermal stores, such as Elson Coral E, Gledhill PulsaCoil and Albion Mainsflow.
This is where McDonald Water Storage, the thermal store specialists, can provide you the perfect replacement solution, being the only hot water cylinder company in the UK to specialise in manufacturing like for like replacements for any existing copper thermal store.
Having a suitable replacement enables you to minimise disruption as well as reduce the installation times and associated costs required by amending pipework to suit the new connections. Our flexible manufacturing process has been custom designed to deliver like for like replacement units within a matter of days.
And with our commitment to manufacturing high quality hot water storage solution, you can be assured that the replacement thermal store we provide delivers superior thermal transfer properties and incorporates the right levels of insulation.
Which Makes of Thermal Stores Can We Provide Replacements For?
McDonald Water Storage’s unique approach to manufacturing hot water cylinders enables us to manufacture replacements for virtually any make or model of thermal stores.
The Gledhill PulsaCoil is a hot water only thermal store, which was introduced to the market over 20 years ago. The models varied widely, with cylindrical or rectangular cased variants including;
- Gledhill PulsaCoil II
- Gledhill Pulsacoil III
- Gledhill Pulsacoil 2000
- Gledhill Pulsacoil A-Class
- Gledhill Pulsacoil BP
- Gledhill PulsaCoil Stainless
.

Over this time, the PulsaCoil moved from copper to stainless steel, but as a result older variants have been discontinued, with the later models not having the same footprint, and in most cases, requiring a third additional electrical supply.
The MULTIflow and MULTIflow+ offer a replacement solution for any PulsaCoil product range, with both rectangular and cylinder options.
However, with the hot water being generated utilising an internal coil, and the hot water temperature being controlled by the manual blending valve, it provides benefits to both homeowners and installers including;
- Same footprint as existing PulsaCoil models
- No plate heat exchanger used, therefore no circulating pump required
- Temperature of the domestic hot water controlled by manual blending valve, with no requirement for additional flow sensors or costly PCB components
- The units only require two electrical supplies, as many discontinued PulsaCoil models, providing a simpler installation
.
Ultimately for the homeowner, there are very few serviceable components used on the MULTIflow products, therefore ongoing maintenance costs are dramatically reduced.
See our MULTIflow and MULTIflow+ product pages for further information.
The Albion Mainsflow is a thermal store system, providing mains pressure hot water and were suitable for use in both new build and existing properties. They are suitable for use with traditional gas or oil fired boilers, or electric only. These products were discontinued prior to 2020, making a replacement solution problematic to source … not any more!
The THERMflow thermal store range provides the perfect replacement solution for Albion Mainsflow products, minimising disruption for homeowners and simplifying installations.
Incorporating the same technology of an internal coil and manual blending valve, there are no requirements for additional electrical supplies or costly and often problematic components to maintain on a regular basis
See our THERMflow product page for further information.
The Gledhill Torrent is a heating and hot water, or a hot water only thermal store. The models varied widely with variants including;
- Gledhill Torrent
- Gledhill ECO
- Gledhill Torrent Greenheat
- Gledhill Torrent Multifuelstore
.
The Torrent products moved from copper to stainless steel, with the older variants have been discontinued, with later models not having the same bespoke design flexibility and requiring an additional electrical supply for the electrical components.
The THERMflow range provides a direct replacement solution for any Torrent product.
With the hot water being generated utilising an internal coil, and the hot water temperature being controlled by the manual blending valve, it provides benefits to both homeowners and installers including;
- Bespoke designed to suit any existing Torrent cylinder, including renewable technologies
- No plate heat exchanger used, therefore no circulating pump required
- Temperature of the domestic hot water controlled by manual blending valve, with no requirement for additional flow sensors or costly PCB components
- With insulation options of injection foamed and cased or spray foamed
.
Ultimately for the homeowner, there are very few serviceable components used on the THERMflow products, therefore ongoing maintenance costs are dramatically reduced.
See our THERMflow product page for further information.
The discontinued Grant ThermaWave is a heating and hot water, or a hot water only stainless steel thermal store.
The ThermaWave thermal Store cylinders allowed multiple heat sources to be connected in a number of different ways, with the back-up feature of two 3kW immersion elements. It allowed homeowners to have a gas or oil fired boiler connected to an Aga or solid fuel appliance and also a renewable heat source such as solar thermal or a heat pump. In addition, underfloor heating system manifolds as well as radiator circuits can also be directly connected to the store.
The THERMflow range provides a direct replacement solution for any ThermaWave product.
With the hot water being generated utilising an internal coil, and the hot water temperature being controlled by the manual blending valve, it provides benefits to both homeowners and installers including;
- Bespoke designed to suit any existing ThermaWave cylinder, including renewable technologies
- With insulation options of injection foamed and cased or spray foamed
.
Ultimately for the homeowner, there are very few serviceable components used on the THERMflow products, therefore ongoing maintenance costs are dramatically reduced.

Elson developed an extensive range of hot water storage units, specifically designed to maximise the use of available space, especially in apartment applications. Their thermal store products included;
- Elson Coral E
- Elson Coral Si
Following the closure of the Elson manufacturing centre and discontinuation of the entire range of rectangular units in 2011, McDonald Water Storage purchased the manufacturing equipment and recruited one of the Senior Product Engineers to meet the demand for replacement units.
This has led to being able to provide a direct replacement for any Elson thermal store, with our CUBEflow range, enabling homeowners to replace original Elson Coral E and Coral Si models on a like for like basis.
The replacement of the existing Elson tank couldn’t be easier. Simply provide the details from the existing data badge and we will be able to manufacture the product exactly to fit the current space being utilised.
See our CUBEflow product page for further information.
Dependant on the model, the Gledhill BoilerMate is either a heating and hot water thermal store or hot water only thermal store, which was introduced to the market over 20 years ago. The models varied widely, with cylindrical or rectangular cased variants including;
- Gledhill BoilerMate II
- Gledhill BoilerMate III
- Gledhill BoilerMate 2000
- Gledhill BoilerMate A-Class
- Gledhill BoilerMate BP
.
Over this time, the BoilerMate moved from copper to stainless steel, but as a result older variants have been discontinued, with the later models not having the same footprint.
The MULTIflow, MULTIflow+ and THERMflow ranges offer a replacement options for any BoilerMate product range, with both rectangular and cylinder options.
However, with the hot water being generated utilising an internal coil, and the hot water temperature being controlled by the manual blending valve, it provides benefits to both homeowners and installers including;
- Cylinder models bespoke designed and manufactured to fit any model variant footprint or additional tapping configuration
- No plate heat exchanger used, therefore no circulating pump required
- Temperature of the domestic hot water controlled by manual blending valve, with no requirement for additional flow sensors or costly PCB components
.
Ultimately for the homeowner, there are very few serviceable components used on our thermal store products, therefore ongoing maintenance costs are dramatically reduced.
