It was fantastic Wellington Sports Centre choose McDonald Water Storage Buffer Tank as part of a £3.6 million carbon cutting makeover.
The sustainable improvements for the busy Sport and Leisure Centre include replacing and upgrading their ventilation unit, installing solar panels onto the building roof, replacing and upgrading windows and doors and replacing a fossil fuel heating system with electric air source heat pumps to boot!
They ordered three 1500L Mild Steel Buffers which are to be used in conjunction with renewable energy installations. The heat is dumped and stored in the buffer tanks to be utilised throughout the day and are are used in air source heat pump systems to improve efficiency and performance.
Buffer Vessels help to cut down on the length of time the boiler is on and therefor reduces the associated boiler or heat pump cycling in turn, saving energy! A buffer tank contains a volume of water which increases the overall volume of the heating distribution system.
Boiler cycling is a key concern as it not only reduces operation life of heating equipment, increases breakdowns and the need for servicing but also increases fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Buffer vessels help reduce the on/off cycling of the heat pump. Air source heat pumps are most efficient when they operate continuously at a steady load. However, the heating or cooling demand in such a busy building can vary. The buffer tanks allow the heat pumps to operate for more extended periods at a consistent output, avoiding frequent starts and stops, which can be less efficient.
Buffer vessels also contribute to the stability of the heating or cooling system. They store excess energy produced by the heat pump during periods of low demand and release it when demand is high. This helps maintain a more stable and comfortable indoor temperature.
Buffer tanks can improve the overall efficiency of the heat pump system by allowing the heat pump to operate at its optimal efficiency level for more extended periods. This can result in energy savings and increased system performance.
