It was great to support IMS Heat Pumps, this time providing a 300 Litre Buffer Cylinder for their unique heat pump project.
BACKGROUND
The property was a Category B listed property, originally built in 1770 within the Parkland setting in East Lothian. The current owners have undertaken the responsibility of ensuring the energy efficiency of this historical masterpiece for the benefit of future generations whilst reducing any impact on the properties aesthetics.
SOLUTION
To fulfil the homeowners vision, they enlisted the expertise of an independent consultancy firm specialising in renewable technologies. Initially, a ground source heat pump was considered, however, it became evident that the bedrock’s heat conductivity was insufficient, making the ground source heat pump financially unviable. Subsequently, the focus shifted to air source heat pumps.
The stringent regulations governing the preservation of listed properties presented additional challenges, such as the preservation of the existing column radiators. This necessitated the development of a hybrid heating system that seamlessly integrated with the current oil boiler and heating infrastructure. The consultancy obtained multiple quotes for the design and installation, ultimately choosing IMS Heat Pumps as their installation partner, as they had worked with them in a previous role, so he knew exactly how each other worked.
To overcome the unique challenges posed by the project, a bespoke hybrid heating solution was designed. Three Vaillant A+12kW heat pumps were installed, operating in a cascade system. This setup, in conjunction with the existing oil boiler and bespoke designed buffer store, ensured a smooth transition to the new heating and hot water system.
The transition to a hybrid heating system represents more than just an upgrade; it symbolises a commitment to a sustainable future. It preserves the historical significance of this architectural masterpiece while contributing to a greener world.
